Stuffed French Onion Soup Burgers

Who doesn’t love French Onion Soup?  It’s hard to resist when I see it on a menu.  The end of June though is hardly a time to make soup.  It’s hot out there!  So, after searching online (thanks once again goes to Pinterest!), I found this burger recipe that I knew I just *had* to try!  It’s a French onion burger *stuffed* with cheese!  What could be better than that?!

The secret ingredient in this meal is a favorite of mine…ta da!

Yup, good old Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix.  I normally use this mix to make my *favorite* dip.  One packet of this and some sour cream and you are in business!  (I serve it at *every* party, as does my mother, my sister, my cousin Jenn, the list goes on and on…)  Today, though, you only need 2 tablespoons of the mix.  (This means that you can buy a small container of sour cream, the 8 ounce one, and use the leftover soup mix to make that delicious dip!  Yay!!)

Start with the onions…you need time to cook them low and slow, so plan ahead…

  • Start with 2 large sweet onions.
  • Cut the onions in half, peel, and then thinly slice.  (It seems like a lot of onions for just 4 burgers, but they will cook down big time, I promise!)
  • Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of butter.
  • Add 1 tablespoon of EVOO.
  • Once the butter melts into the oil, add the onions.
  • Mix the onions to coat in the oil-butter mixture, then let cook low and slow.  Stir every now and then.

Once the onions are golden, start on the burgers…

  • First, cut some thin squares of fontina cheese.  (You really one need 4, but cut some more to munch on.)
  • Preheat your grill (or Cuisinart Griddler like me) to medium-high.
  • Then, add 1 package of ground beef to a large bowl.
  • Add the secret ingredient (2 tablespoons of Lipton’s Onion Soup Mix).
  • Add 1/4 cup water.
  • Take your rings off, and mix everything together with your hands.
  • Score the meat into 4 equal sections, then roll each section into a ball.
  • To make the burgers, divide each ball into 2 sections.
  • Flatten one section into a patty, and add a square of cheese.
  • Flatten the other section of meat and top the cheese-filled patty, pressing the edges together.
  • Place the burgers on your Griddler (or grill).
  • Cook on one side until the meat is cooked through, then flip to finish cooking.

To serve, place each burger on a whole wheat bun and top with the golden brown onions.

These burgers were really delicious.  It honestly tasted like I was having a bowl of French onion soup.  Having the cheese inside the burger was a treat.  My husband was a big fan, too.  I definitely will be making these again soon!  Enjoy!
